Sunday, February 12 at 7 p.m. Our Bible Study in Hunter River and will cover 2 John (if not discussed on the 5th); 3 John; and Jude. Here is some info on Jude: “The book of Jude unmasks pretenders and brings to light the carefully concealed misdeeds of false teachers in the body of Christ. Using graphic word pictures and recalling a rogue’s gallery of deceivers from the Old Testament, Jude documents a history of subversive forces that threatened to destroy Israel and threatened to destroy the early church. Watch out, the letter warns, because “certain people have crept in unnoticed … ungodly people, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. By blowing the whistle on such imposters, Jude makes sure that they will no longer be “unnoticed.” The author doesn’t give us advice on how to do away with false teachers. He merely urges us to guard ourselves by building ourselves up in the faith. The best protection against deception is a mature grasp of God’s revealed truth. All welcome, fellowship and will follow.

Tonight in our Bible Study, we will start the letters written by John (1, 2, and 3 John). Toward the end of the first century, some Christians began “drifting away” from the truth about Christ. They were losing touch with those who had known Jesus in the flesh as the founders of the church began to die off. They were also being seduced by competing doctrines (teachings), especially early froms of gnosticism. As a result, second and third generation believers began to grow cold in their love for each other and lukewarm in their commitment to the truth. One response to this trend was the writings of John. These letters call Christians back to the basics – the truth about Christ and the love of Christ. Does this sound crucial for Christians today? Why not come and discuss this – please read 1 John, chapters 1, 2, and 3, then come and join us in a time of discussion, followed by a time of fellowship. You are more than welcome to come to the Brookfield Church Hall at 7:00pm

Despite the onset of short rains this December, millions are still suffering the effects of limited food availability, sky rocketing food prices, and water scarcity. PWS&D is committed to long-term intervention in this region and together we can continue to provide food and clean water, as well as seeds and agricultural training to affected communities who are in desperate need of your support.
Welcoming a Stranger – Looking for an exciting opportunity to take part in the life-changing ministry of helping refugees begin new lives in Canada? Refugee sponsorship is a tangible way for a congregation to take action. More than 4.5 million Iraqi citizens have been uprooted from their homes since the Iraq conflict began in 2003 and over 2 million have sought asylum in neighbouring countries. An opportunity now exists for Presbyterian congregations to take on sponsorship of Iraqi refugees. To learn more about embracing the challenge of welcoming a refugee to Canada, as well as what funding is available, speak to your minister or mission committee leader, and contact PWS&D refugee coordinator Carolyn Vanderlip at cvanderlip@presbyterian.ca or call 1-800-619-7301 ext. 249. www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd/welcoming-a-stranger/.

                                                      TAIWAN: Translating the Bible

Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support the Rev. Dr. Paul McLean as he works with a Bible translation team in Taiwan to translate the Bible into the Hakka language. They are working to finish the complete translation by 2012, when The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan celebrates “The Year of Hakka Mission”. Paul says, “Since this is all God’s work, we pray that the Lord will help us achieve this very worthy goal.” Let us pray that the newly translated Bible will be a guiding light for Hakka Christians in Taiwan.

Monday, January 9 at 7 p.m. Prayer Meeting will be at the home of Shirley and Philip Weatherbee’s. Consider this your invitation to attend. All welcome.

Tonight – we will continue our Bible Study of the New Testament beyond the Gospels. We will begin the Book of 1 Peter. Peter’s first letter offers unique hope to people “grieved by various trails” (1:6), a hope rooted in the power of Jesus’ triumph over death (1:3, 21) and the certainty of His return (1:13). What practical difference does that hope make? It
dramatically affects one’s behaviour. Instead of caving in under the stress and pressure of adversity, the person of hope responds with Christlike dignity and moral integrity. Come as we discover the great comfort we can find in this letter – that we are not alone when we encounter disappointment, pain, or persecution. Jesus suffered the same kind of “fiery trial” and stands with us in our troubles, and shows us how to face adversity. Please read chapters 1, 2, and 3, and come join us in a time discussion, followed by a time of fellowship. You are more than welcome to come to the Brookfield Church Hall at 7:00pm.

Overjoyed with Success in Ghana – Isaac Bukari’s face can hardly contain his beaming his smile. For many years, Isaac suffered discrimination and neglect from his family and community in Ghana due to epilepsy until a PWS&D partner helped him access medication and enrolled him in a PWS&D-supported vocational training centre. Isaac excelled at weaving, dyeing fabrics and making soap, and received a new wooden loom and weaving materials to start his own business. Filled with joy and gratitude, Isaac says his life is now “fruitful and productive.” Today, Isaac runs a successful weaving business from his home and occasionally visits the training centre to teach new students how to follow in his footsteps. This Advent season, you can help young people like Isaac get a new start on life through support of PWS&D. www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd
